Great question! – Here are some pointers that might help you.
- Imagine that you are speaking directly to the professor, supervisor or fellow member of your research group.
- Simplify the concepts you are describing by using simple straightforward language as your audience is just a friend or someone else who knows nothing about the topic
- Remember – confusion or over-elaborate repetitiveexplanations may cause your audience either to lose interest or fall asleep.
- Keep your descriptions short and to the point.
- Always acknowledge your sources and quote them. Make sure that your references in the text match the entries in the Reference list.
- Don’t try to impress your audience by using flowery language. Keep your English accurate and don’t use words you don’t know the exact meaning of.
- Avoid repetition.
- Avoid using According to … or studies show that … or as a result of … Rather just quote the source.
- Remember – most studies should be referred to in the past tense because the research took place in the past tense; Only use present tense if the research took place in the same year as the document you are writing.

Sorry! Have to go back to politics for a brief moment …
Given the political situation South Africa finds itself in at present, with the likelihood of major changes in the way the country is governed; it seems that a sea change is likely soon! which will probably present better opportunities for employment.
Thus, Students and Graduates – try not to focus on the “noise” too much and rather focus on your studies and academic advancement a bit more because whichever way it goes; one thing is certain. Our country is changing fast. So, prepare yourself to take advantage of changes. Opportunity Knocks!
(Stop Press! The DA has just taken the lead over The ANC in the latest IRR poll.)
