We were given plenty of warning of the disaster that was about to happen. President Ramaphosa of the ANC (or should I just say – our non-president whose loyalties in truth have for some time have been prioritised on his own selfish criminal activities), in his unbelievably stupid way, has continued to arrogantly defy America’s President Donald Trump, in the mistaken belief that America under Trump actually considers South Africa as a country that America needs to trade with.

Trump’s reasons for taking action against South Africa
- The security threat that South Africa poses to the western world, including the US for the following reasons:
- The case that South Africa brought against Israel in the ICC
- The disastrous meeting between a South Africa and the US in the White House where Ramaphosa lied about the problem of farm murders in South Africa
- Trump’s conditions for procuring a trade deal with South Africa, which Ramaphosa ignored while continuing to propose a trade deal that would benefit South Africa; namely;
- Trump’s demand for removal of BEE conditions for US companies wanting to do business with South Africa.
- Taking action against Human rights abuses against minority groups in South Africa.
- Bringing into South African law a requirement for farm murders to be dealt with as a priority crime.
- Banning of the Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer chant.
- Ramaphosa’s continuing association with terrorist countries such as Iran and Palestine, which support terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
No matter what happens next, it is clear that South Africans are in for a rough ride; economically and politically.
As there appears to be a strong possibility that the ANC government is rapidly unravelling, that Ramaphosa appears to be contemplating disappearing to who knows where; and that some new form of government will be formed soon – We have to ask how all this disruption will affect South Africans in general.
Firstly; the tariffs at the 30% level will have a serious effect on the cost of food, which will affect all of us. For example, taking a wild guess; the cost of a supermarket trolleyful of groceries is likely to go from 3000-00 Rand to 3300 Rand; which will prove to be a severe burden on the average 4 person family. The poorer citizens in our country; especially single parents or grandparent-headed households will be pushed to the brink of starvation.
Charity organisations that supply food to starving families will be under more pressure to feed people who depend on them and some will have to close down.
Many businesses will have to lay off staff or worse, close.
Transportation networks will be put under increasing pressure and will probably have to reduce the size of their operations meaning job losses. Food transportation will suffer and supermarket shelves will be empty or near empty.
Of course, senior ANC members won’t give a “rats arse” about poorer people and will continue to plunder what’s left of the nation’s coffers.
The only good thing about all of this is that change is already happening, with multiple protests all around the country and unfortunately, concomitant loss of life and property. The pressure on whatever government comes into play will be intense. There is a strong possibility that grants will be put under pressure and some may even be stopped.
So, if the so-called ‘leaders’ that emerge from this mess want to preserve the feeding trough they all feed from, they will have to amend the constitution and replace it with something that is more in tune with todays world. Words like transformation, renewal, the new dawn, and similar rubbish will be forced to fall away; and if we survive that period, we can only hope that a more commonsense governing regime will take over.
What this means for people who are already battling to survive, but for now are still just keeping their heads above water, is that job security is likely to be threatened in the near future, and consequently, more and more people are going to have to either leave the country or conjure-up alternative ways to make money; so they and their families can at least put food in the table. This means putting one’s talent to work by creating a ‘side hustle’ or starting a new micro-business that can grow during this turbulent period we are now entering.
