Suprisingly, after 18 months the GNU coalition government is still functioning. This is gratifying as it signals that the majority of sensible South Africans are still in favour of having a coalition running things.

Here are some reasons why we have reached this point:
- The DA has shown themselves to be the most stable party in the GNU; as evidenced by the the fact that municipalities where the DA has an overall majority are stable and showing ‘green shoots’ of progress and some stability.
- The ANC party has even gone so far as admitting that ANC members should take note of how the DA is achieving this end and apply the lessons gained to managing their own municipalities. This was an astounding and gratifying event when one considers what the situation was only a few years ago, when the ANC would never even have considered that any party that was in opposition would challenge ANC dominance when they had previously been consistently enjoying a share of over 60% of the country’s votes.
- The question posed by asking what had changed things so dramatically to bring about this astounding situation, can be answered by referring to Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs theory, which states that human needs are heirarchically ordered, with matters such as availability of food, shelter and safety at the top of the pyramid showing human needs.
- This was the fatal error that the ANC chosen to ignore in favour of satisfying the needs of the ANC elite.
- Another factor that badly damaged the ANC’S hold over power was their stubborn and obstinate support of their struggle mentality and consequent policy of blaming the Apartheid system for what has bedevilled South African society continuously since the advent of the so-called Rainbow Nation; that never came to pass; mainly because of the greed and lust for power by the ‘elite’ that has crippled all attempts to uplift the majority of the black population and continues to do so today.
- What made things even worse was the BEE policy that was intended to uplift the majority of the population’s standard of living; that was a complete failure from Day One; mainly because the system was corrupted by the greed of the elite, which turned them into millionares and billionaires.
I could go on and on indefinitely in this vein; but it’s pointless because the citizens have become ‘Gatvol’ and consequently, the ANC’s share of the votes is already threatening to drop below 30%.
Fortunately, we don’t all have to be politicians; but what we do need to do is to continue to fight for the rights of all people in our beautiful country; urgently support and overhaul the education system and support local action to encourage privately run organisations to form partnerships that can improve the quality of life for all, create opportunities to produce more jobs and promote private initiatives to replace incompetency and patronage with success based on merit – not on ‘who you know’ – because sure as hell, the ANC led government is not going to do it!
Examples showing that this is already taking place are; private participation in Eskom, which has greatly improved the energy system; including the amazingly fast developement of privately owned solar systems, South African Airways services which have been replaced by private airlines.
Also encouraging very recently, was the reasonably successful hosting of the G20 event.
