(This message is being offered by an observer, a business owner and a citizen of South Africa)
Why is our government; at all levels, finding it so difficult to understand how to deal with Corona virus; in particular the third wave that is now upon us?
I am not a doctor, a politician or a cabinet minister but to me; and I am sure, many others, the way forward is clear.
The people who can stop Corona in its tracks are not getting the message. As a country, after two previous waves that allowed the health authorities to beef up the health system, discover the vaccine and implement it; we now know enough about the virus to know what to do. Why don’t we do it?
The steps should be self-evident:
BAN ALL PUBLIC GATHERINGS OF 10 PEOPLE OR MORE; no matter whether it a church service, a wedding, funerals, “after tears parties”, initiation camps for the male youth and social or business events. This is a LIFE OR DEATH INSTRUCTION – so do it.
ARREST ALL PEOPLE WHO DO NOT COMPLY AND FINE THEM HEAVILY!
Tradition is important, but all traditional events should be set aside in the face of a virus that can only multiply and mutate if we humans allow it to do so. By contrast, if we simply follow logical steps to avoid dangerous exposure to other people, thus avoiding the invasion of infected droplets via our noses and mouths, then the virus will progressively die off, as it will no longer have hosts to thrive in.
Staying alive and protecting other people’s lives is more important than any gathering. If you die you will not be getting married. Your fiancee, if he/she is worth it, will still love you if you don’t get married this week. Political rallies can wait until after the Covid crisis has passed.
If you are inside, OPEN A WINDOW, to ventilate the space.
If you are outside, WEAR A MASK if you are close to people; and know that the MASK IS USELESS IF IT DOES NOT COVER YOUR NOSE AND MOUTH!
If you are outside and a breeze is blowing and you are away from people or with tested, uninfected family members or friends, you DO NOT NEED TO WEAR A MASK.
GET VACCINATED!
STAY HEALTHY. Eat healthy food, don’t overeat, boost your immune system.
People who ignore these instructions are guilty of ATTEMPTED MURDER! and should be treated as such; and that includes eminent members of society such ex-president Donald Trump and President Bolsonaro in Brazil.
The good news news is that infections in the last 24 hours have dropped from over 5000 cases per day to a number in the 3000s.
Now; what we as a nation have to do is not to get excited by this as we have done before and start celebrating; thinking that we have beaten the virus. (one step forward and 3 steps back). We must just continue following the rules until the Corona Virus reaches the level of influenza or Measles and simply has to be managed. Fingers crossed!!
FAST FORWARD TO 11 JUNE – 3 days later. Infection now OVER 9000 INFECTIONS PER 24 HOURS – Why? GATHERINGS!, LOW LEVEL MASK WEARING AND SOCIAL DISTANCING! Mr Ramaphosa PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW – as per above! – Enuff said.
