Let’s hope it really works this time!

Many people say … “I am not interested in politics”. The problem is that politics sticks its infuriating fingers into every single aspect of our lives; our employment prospects, our hopes for the future, our children’s schooling, whether we have a roof over our heads to whether we have food on the table etc. …

We now have to try to simply refocus onto more mundane matters now and leave the messy business of politics to the people. WE have chosen the GNU option and should now rather concentrate on ways in which we can all work together under the new GNU administration, to better our lives.

On the other hand, it isa difficult to ignore the crucial issues that will be debated intensively by the various political groupings in the next hundred days or so, because things are moving so fast; both in South Africa and overseas. Whether we like it or not, every one of us is affected.

Hence, I find it difficult to avoid looking at and trying to understand the tightrope Ramaphosa is walking on, both in his own country and with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president. Ramaphosa is definitely continuing to maintain friendly relations with Putin and the other BRICS countries, in preference to allying South Africa with the Central European and US BLOC.

Putin is still under a cloud with the International Criminal Court, who issued a warrant of arrest against him for the alleged kidnapping and human rights abuses of 2000 children in the Ukraine. Hence, he will not be attending Ramaphosa’s inauguration as President. However, he did congratulate Cyril on his appointment.

I see that the ANC is now starting to get rid of or demote some of its deadwood. The buzz from Daily Maverick reports that a high-ranking member of the party elite has been demoted to a less senior position – presumably because his views are in conflict with the party’s current mission to insist that ‘we should all work together‘. Long may it continue. There’s a lot of deadwood and WE ARE PAYING FOR IT!

Breaking news! Daily Maverick has also reported that the GNU partners now have a two-thirds majority – by having 273 members in the Assembly, due to the addition of the PA and the Good party, under Patricia De Lille, which means that they now have the ability to change the Constitution. Whether they should do so is open to discussion; but I for one and I am sure many others, would say that they should leave it exactly as it is for now!

DEFINITELY PLENTY OF FIREWORKS TO COME IN PARLIAMENT OVER THESE HIGHLY CONTENTIOUS ISSUES!
