Simple straightforward instructions on how to grow vegetables in pots and planters in South Africa

Step1:  Go to a nursery in your area that looks professional, where the people look friendly and where the plants look healthy. Also look around to see if the nursery is busy.

Step 2: Go inside and buy some plants, a bag of potting soil and some compost

Take your plants, fertiliser and potting soil home.

(Before you start your planting operation; make sure that your dogs are not close by, because they will complicate the operation for sure!)

Step 3: Make sure that your planter and pots are clean and sanitised. Take some black dustbin bags. Lay them down in each trough so they form a protective layer around the sides and bottom of each shelf.

Step 4: Place small pebbles in the bottom of each pot and planter shelf, for good drainage.

Step 5: punch holes at the bottom of each plastic lined shelf so excess water can drain.

Step 6: Start collecting kitchen scraps and store them in a bin, to make sure that you have a way to turn kitchen scraps into compost later on. You also should drill holes in the sides of your compost bin to allow the sun’s warmth and fresh air to permeate the bin.

Step 7: Make sure that your pots and planter have plenty of sunshine; and do not over-water.

Then you can enjoy delicious almost free vegetables and herbs all year round.
