There is a huge amount of ‘Mumbo Jumbo’ spread by so-called experts on SEO who tell you that if you have the right keywords and contract to a reputable website designer with a great track record, to design and create the ‘most wonderful impressive looking website with all the right bells and whistles’ that your business will over time, take off like a rocket and make you a billionare. IT’S NOT THAT SIMPLE!

After running a small but quite successful editing business for 10 years plus; connected to a modest but beautifully-designed but very affordable website that has grown our business organically – here are some basic principles that will allow you to grow your business in a similar way.

  • Firstly, you need to establish a personal relationship with your audience; in order to gain their trust.
  • A website alone will not grow your business; no matter how beautiful it is,
  • Your website needs to be extremely active in the following ways:
  • You need to do regular blogposts as often as possible, so as create a personal relationship with your present and potential future clients. Don’t listen to people who tell you not to blog too often
  • You need regular testimonials from clients, attesting to your relationship with them, and to the quality of service you gave them.
  • Don’t try to impress your viewers with over-technical, overly – wordy jargon. It doesn’t matter what method you use to communicate – emails, blogposts or videos or a combination of these – keep the language straightforward, succinct, direct.
  • Answer the questions in your website that you know your clients are asking – before they ask. You know what they are!

After consulting many so called SEO “fundies” I have come to the conclusion that such ‘experts’ are very good at the business of making money for themselves, but not so good at making SEO do what it’s supposed to do – which is to drive traffic to websites; and more importantly, to allow the owners of the websites to earn money from the websites. No matter how pretty or impressive a website may look – if it doesn’t make money, it is nothing more than a huge waste of time and money for the business owner.

When we first started our website, after about a year, during which the site only generated a couple of leads, my partner and I decided to try and make the SEO work ourselves, without the help of an ‘SEO expert’ and we found that blogposts were the ‘maguc key’; that enabled the website to start ‘cooking’ and we started to receive quote requests for our services.

Strategies that worked for us

  • An attractive well organised, user friendly site with links to social media platforms.
  • Lots of attractive pictures, relating to the content.
  • Copy that reflected the ‘vibe’ of our of our business so visitors could get a ‘feel’ of what kind of people we are.
  • A testimonials page.
  • Most important! a blog page wherein we, the owners could post regular interesting, useful blogs on all sorts of topics, but mainly relating to our business.

We discovered that it was vital to keep the site ‘alive’ with fresh content every week.

Our customers, viewers and followers like to see frequent posts so they can keep track of what’s going-on; particularly in light of the rapidly developing digitally-driven world we live in today.

Keywords are still valid today as they allow ‘bots’ to track your progress and rate businesses and individual users and sot and act on trends.

Recent developments, particularly new social media platforms and rapid and changes regarding AI have revolutionised our lives completely; especially regarding ChatGtp in its various forms. Theses developments are changing the SEO scenario almost daily, and businesses need to keep pace with them, so as not tof fall behind; as new challenges and opportunities occur constantly.

The other trend that is changing the face of SEO is the fact that videos appear to be surpassing the effectiveness of blogposts; although posts are still effective. Though costs are certainly higher than just blogging; it seems that the appeal of regular videos by representatives of companies, especially owners in videos, creates a more personal relationship with companies and individuals, which hence increases trust.
