You’ve checked the figures, polished the proposal and attached the right file. You hit send.

Then you spot it.

A spelling mistake in the opening sentence. The wrong company name on page two. Or a price that has somehow gained an extra zero.

It’s only a typo … isn’t it?

In business documentation, small mistakes can carry costs far beyond a red face. Some are easy to measure. Others quietly chip away at the confidence you’ve worked hard to build.

Trust can wobble before the conversation begins

Your documents often speak for your business before you do. A proposal, brochure or welcome pack gives potential clients clues about how you work.

When the details look rushed, readers may wonder what else has been overlooked. That doesn’t mean one misplaced apostrophe will lose you a contract. But repeated errors can make it harder for someone to feel confident choosing you.

Careful presentation helps your expertise shine through without distractions.

Tiny errors create extra work

A typo takes seconds to make. Untangling the confusion can take much longer.

An incorrect meeting date prompts a string of emails. A mistyped product code sends someone searching for the wrong item. An outdated contact detail leaves a customer wondering why nobody has replied.

Now several people are spending time correcting something that could have been caught before the document went out.

There’s the hidden cost: interrupted work, duplicated effort and another task added to an already busy day.

The wrong number can become an expensive number

Some typos change the meaning of a document completely.

Think of a quotation showing the wrong quantity, an invoice with an incorrect total or delivery instructions containing the wrong address.

These mistakes can lead to disputes, delays, replacement deliveries or awkward conversations about what was actually agreed. Even when the problem is resolved, someone still has to spend time putting it right.

Numbers deserve just as much proofreading attention as words.

Your message loses its momentum

You want readers thinking, “This sounds brilliant.”

You don’t want them thinking, “Did they mean ‘public’?”

A distracting mistake pulls attention away from your message. Instead of focusing on your offer, your reader starts decoding a sentence or questioning a detail.

For marketing materials especially, that interruption matters. You’ve worked hard to earn someone’s attention; every unnecessary distraction makes your message work harder.

A fresh pair of eyes is a business asset

Proofreading is part of making your documents clear, reliable and easy to act on.

Build a final check into your process. Confirm names, dates, prices and contact details. Read headings separately. Check the finished layout, where missing words and awkward line breaks can hide.

And whenever possible, ask someone else to review important documents. When you know what you meant to write, it’s surprisingly easy to read straight past what’s actually there.

At Busy Bee, we believe the little details deserve attention. Before your next document takes flight, give it one final check.

Because a small typo shouldn’t steal the buzz from a great business.
